Hollywood sound editor gives audio masterclass

Futureworks Audio Engineering students received a masterclass in Hollywood sound editing from renowned dubbing mixer Leon Minas.

Leon, a specialist dubbing mixer, sound editor and sound supervisor, taught the students the same techniques he used for Lord of the Rings, Star Wars II: Attack of the Clones and Mission Impossible 2, as well as a host of drama productions for BBC, ITV and Channel 4.

The masterclass - delivered to year 2 students on the Audio Engineering & Production Diploma - focused on sound editing and ADR (Automated Dialogue Replacement). It gave the students a unique insight into the techniques and workflows used in the production of big-budget feature films and dramas.

Said Leon: "I've been really impressed by the quality of the facilities and the competency of students at Futureworks. Their dedicated nature and imaginative questioning led to thoroughly productive and enjoyable lectures and I look forward to sharing my experience in forthcoming lectures at Futureworks. I feel Futureworks facilities and professional ethos gives students a fantastic head start into future careers in audio."

The hands-on class took place in our Dubbing Theatre equipped to the same specification as a commercial post production room. The suite incorporates a 32 channel Digidesign D-Control worksurface, Pro Tools HD3 recording system, cinema surround sound and a THX specification screen.

With a year of sound engineering and production skills under their belts, the students are now in the first semester of their second and final year, which teaches them how to apply their skills to audio post-production - creating and editing sound for picture.

Leon, who will be passing on his expert knowledge to every Audio Engineering class, is the latest addition to Futureworks Audio tutor team. We're almost as delighted as the students are to have him on board!
